There wasn’t any part of me that was ready to leave Charleston on my last road trip. After all, I’ve truly fallen head over heels for the historic city and I absolutely cannot wait to call it home soon. Thankfully, I had one more fun stop that I was really looking forward to on the way home – a night at The Historic Brookstown Inn in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I could already tell by their website that a stay here was going to be a unique experience, which is what I crave most when traveling.
History of the Brookstown Inn
I wasn’t sure what exactly their tagline, “a living museum of History, Art & Treasure in Winston-Salem, NC” meant, but I was sure excited to find out! Originally, the structure was a cotton mill built in 1837 as a part of what was known as the Fries Mill Complex. The site played an important roll in the industrial revolution and has since been listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of 1977. It’s also noted as one of the Historic Hotels of America. From the moment you pull up to the brick building, you can tell you’re about to talk a walking back in time. There’s even an extensive display in the lobby, the History Exhibit, detailing the inn’s complicated story.
Unique Features of the Brookstown Inn
After taking in the lobby and the other historical artifacts sprinkled throughout the property, I made my way to the HUGE room I stayed in. The spacious, two-level suite featured many of the historical elements of the building. Soaring ceilings, original wooden beams, and exposed hand-made brick walls gave the space a rustic charm which was complemented by a hand-stitched quilt on the bed along with decorative eighteenth and nineteenth century antiques placed around the room. Balanced with modern amenities, rooms and suites also include a flat-screen TV, Keurig Coffee Maker, mini-fridge, microwave, and a wonderfully comfortable bed.
As if the expansive lengths the Brookstown Inn has gone to in order to preserve history weren’t impressive enough, the staff also pulls out all the stops imaginable for guests. A stay at Brookstown Inn includes a nightly wine and cheese reception in the Cotton Mill Lounge from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm (with a complimentary glass of wine!), freshly baked cookies before bedtime, and a delicious hot breakfast in the morning. The comforting elegance and top-notch extra extravagances make it easy to see why this place is often recommended as the spot to stay for getaways in Winston Salem, NC.

Staying here really was a one of a kind experience and I especially recommend it if you appreciate staying at non-chain hotels. With 70 guest rooms (no two rooms are the same!), the Brookstown Inn encompasses the modern amenities and efficiency of a luxury hotel with the hospitality and charm of a bed and breakfast. There’s quite literally something to explore around every corner – you never know when you’ll run into another piece of history. While I didn’t experience any paranormal activities while I was there, a quick Google search will lead you to stories of the spooky encounters other guests have claimed to have – if you’re into accommodations with that kind of character.
While it was the cutest spot for a getaway, the property is also an extraordinary spot for weddings, meetings, and events. There’s a gorgeous courtyard that sits in between the various sections of the inn. When I was leaving, they were setting up for some kind of event, which left me daydreaming about how the space could be transformed for any special occasion. And, I was even able to catch a moment with the famed Brookstown Inn cat, Miss Sally, who was more than willing to pose for a photo.
