The sheer beauty of Skyler Man’s designs alone are enough to capture any one’s attention. But, couple that with their commitment to eco-friendly and local production, and we’ve found just the place to get your next statement jewelry piece!
Skyler Man’s raw and romantic designs are the brainchild of Brooklyn-based designer Alina Skyler. Started in 2009, her one-of-a-kind jewelry line fuses precious gemstones and metals to create pieces that evoke both an edgy glamour and a nature-inspired feel. And whatever look you’re going for, Skyler Man is bound to have a piece that will fit you: from their shark-tooth earrings to their dainty, gemstone rings.
Skyler Man is catching the attention of many others besides myself, as well: they are a finalist in the Martha Stewart American Made Contest, which features an array of U.S. artists. Alina shared with me the ins and outs of starting a new business, as well as their commitment to sustainability.
S: It’s certainly difficult to start a new business- what were your biggest sources of inspiration and strength to get you started, and what still keeps you going today?
A: A business is very difficult to start, and had I thought about it that way, I would probably have hesitated. However, I began my business being driven by the creative process, rather than the business aspect. My inspiration began with my desire to create jewelry that was edgy and cool but that still possesses a value. I, myself, wanted to wear unique, funky jewelry, but I wanted it to be valuable and made of real materials and stones. I was also seeking jewelry with that sort of rough/polished look, which can only be achieved through hand-making it. What I was looking for was not abundant in the marketplace, so I figured I would just design my own pieces.
I came strictly from an artistic perspective, and obviously, a company can’t be run on that alone. My sister came along, and really took over the business end of it- the marketing, the financials, the social media, etc. So together, it really became a business.
What keeps me going today is a continuous drive to keep creating jewelry that is unique and stands out in the market place. I am committed to making pieces that are modern but rooted in vintage influences. I am bored with the simple geometrical monotone designs that are abundant in the marketplace. I want jewelry to be interesting again, and as unique as the person who wears it.
S: Discuss your commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness- why is this such an essential part of your business?
A: Our commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness is one of the main aspects of our business. Our main objective is to be produced locally and by hand, and that in itself cuts down greatly on our environmental offense. The jewelry business in itself is not very environmentally friendly, for instance, the energy and resources utilized for mining. If we can do a small part in utilizing recycled gold and silver in the expansion of our business, then we intend to take it. If utilizing recycled materials is a little something that we can do to reduce waste, why not do it? Every little bit that we can do to reduce our carbon footprint is what we do.
S: Why did you decide to enter the American Made contest?
A: A contest that is associated with Martha Stewart is a long shot because there are so many great talents competing, because of the great honor and prestige that would be awarded to the winner. With that said, even making it to the finals of a contest that has so many competing talents and which is associated with Martha Stewart is an honor as well. We make unique, fine jewelry which we are proud of and take great care in making, but marketing it and reaching many followers is a difficult task. Becoming a finalist in this contest has already gained us a lot of publicity, which we are grateful for. We take great pride in being American-made and locally produced, and since that is the title of the contest, we just had to run.
S: What’s your advice to entrepreneurs, especially those in the jewelry or art industries?
A: Everybody follows their own path, so I don’t really think that I’m an authority to give advice. I could say that for me, though, that my artistic drive to create something that I envisioned was what thrust me into this business- but, for others it could just be their desire to make money; everyone is different. The only true piece of advice that I can stick by is, don’t give up with the upsets. There are many downs where you think, this isn’t working. Just keep in mind that everyone goes through that. I know I did. But the sheer drive of wanting to create is what kept me going. Anything that is worth it poses obstacles and trials. There are always hurdles and everything is a learning process.
