He Said, She Said: Our Favorites Ways to Spend a Date Night In

Shaun and I are sharing our HelloFresh reviews, what we watch when we're binge watching Netflix, and why we love our date nights in.

In this post: We’re sharing our HelloFresh reviews, what we watch on Netflix, and why we love our date nights in!

She Said…

I know that on Instagram it might seem like Shaun and I are always out and about, but in reality we both highly value our time at home. There’s really bad lighting in our house (which is why we took these photos at my grandmas), otherwise I’d totally show you pics of me in my jammies, too! Plus, going out takes a lot of work, especially when it’s cold. So, at the end of a crazy week, there’s no other way we’d rather spend date night than chilling at our own house. However, it’s always nice to have other activities to do because there are only so many things to watch on Netflix, you know? That’s one of the reasons we were so excited to try the meal delivery service, HelloFresh. It gave us an activity to do together where we can stay at home in our comfy clothes (you can find all our outfit details here).

The second major reason for me was that I am a SUPER picky eater. I’m not proud about it, but I eat like a child. I like everything plain and I HATE, no DESPISE, vegetables. I hate how they look, how they smell, how they feel, how they look at me. Just everything about them. BUT, my metabolism isn’t as fast as it once was and I’ve also been really tired lately, which I’m sure my diet isn’t helping with. So, I’m really trying to turn around my eating habits. The thing is, I have no idea where to start when it comes to cooking things with veggies. It was so helpful to have recipes with pre-measured ingredients that HelloFresh shipped ready to go instead of the overwhelm of having to figure it all out myself.

Because of HelloFresh, I’ve tried (and liked!) things I never thought I’d touch. My favorite has been the Winner Winner Chicken Orzo Dinner, which has roasted tomato and zucchini as part of the recipe. I even bragged to my mom about how I ate a whole dish of something that had vegetables in it, hahaha.

When we have our date nights in, we normally make our dinner and eat it in front of the TV, being the classy and sophisticated people that we are. My favorite shows that we watch are the superhero related ones. Arrow is at the top of my list, but I do enjoy Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow, too. Marvel’s shows on Netflix like Daredevil, Punisher, and Iron Fist always keep my interest, too. I like anything where people have to implement crisis management skills because I feel like there’s always something I can apply to my life in some way or another (although obviously in a totally different way than them because I am not a superhero, haha). And when people give the superheroes pep-talks when they’re doubting themselves, somehow there’s always something in their inspirational talks that I needed to hear myself… Like Cat Grant’s “Dive” speech to Supergirl.

He Said…

I know that this is nowhere near the most important thing that Allyn mentioned, but I have to be honest when I say that I felt a small sense of pride when I read her favorite shows.  It warms my heart to know that my nerdy lifestyle and passions have worn off on her.  I mean, when we met, she wouldn’t even touch anything X-Men related with a 50 foot pole because of a traumatizing experience from when she was younger (she’ll have to give you the specifics on that at another time).  Since we’ve been together, not only have I assisted in getting her interested in the shows she mentioned above, but she’s also gone to an actual movie theatre to see an X-Men movie and watched the entire first season of Legion with me.  *Virtual high five*

Now that I got that out of the way, I absolutely agree with what she said about valuing our time at home.  It’s nice to have time to just relax in comfortable clothes and watch something in the comfort of our own home.  As you’ve probably already figured out, we have A LOT of shows that we watch.  We actually probably only named about 25% of the ones we watch.  While we’re on this topic, I don’t know how that happened.  I used to only binge watch shows when their entire run was over.  I blame Allyn for this.  Anyway, we need to eat at some point while we’re watching all of these shows.  Neither of us are regularly motivated to cook, and ordering a pizza is just so easy.  I’ll be honest, I was a little skeptical when I first found out we were going to be trying out HelloFresh.  I don’t cook anything that’s very elaborate, although I’m much more open to trying different things than Allyn tends to be.

It was a pleasant surprise when our first HelloFresh shipment arrived and I got to see just how simply everything was made for us.  I will admit that I believe that amateur cooks like ourselves should allow more time than the recipes suggest, but they are still accomplishable in a very reasonable amount of time.  There honestly hasn’t been anything that we’ve made that I haven’t enjoyed, but I’d have to place the Cauliflower Bacon Man ‘N’ Cheese and the Winner Winner Chicken Orzo Dinner at the top.  It has been wonderful to be able to easily make some meals that we probably would’ve never made otherwise, and it has also been wonderful to have Allyn attempting to expand her food horizons.. because now I also get to eat more than pizza and noodles : ) .  Maybe the topic of this post should’ve been more along the lines of congratulating Allyn for overcoming her fears?  Let her know how proud of her you are below!
