Everyone has their idea on what Fashion Week truly is, but you only get to see bits and pieces via the media. You want the truth? Fashion week is all smoke and mirrors. The people I saw walk through those doors are just like you and me. Some have designer handbags and some don’t, some had perfect hair and makeup and some were sweating from walking God knows how many blocks to make it to the show. Everyone was coming together from all types of backgrounds in order to join in this one moment. Where the rooms stands still for five minutes and you get lost in a story.

At Misha Collection, the past was ever-present in channeling the era of Studio 54, and translating it to the modern woman. During my first show, I was looking for myself. Some element of who I want to be needed to pop out. I was not disappointed. The colors and patterns were simple but dangerous. Striking, but polished and could co-exist effortlessly. I had goosebumps. This was me in a nutshell. I’ve always been a person who feels that less is more and while the simplicity in the looks was less, the attitude was full force.
I think for women, we are constantly being told to keep buying this trend and that trend and stuck putting so much emphasis on celebrities that we tend to forget at the core who we are, which is simple. We are powerful women. At the Misha Collection Spring/Summer 2017 show, I felt that there were no trends. It was just a woman in her power suit – a timeless statement (… and no longer about wearing a tailored jacket or boxy pant suit around the office to show authority). Anywhere she went she would be seen.

Being a stylist is challenging at times. My clients are always asking me to find the next big trend and somehow incorporate it into their wardrobe or they will keep buying useless items that they never touch. I had one client who only shopped the trends because it was easy. Running her own business and being a full time mom made her dread shopping. Anything she saw she purchased. She told me in our consultation that no matter what she buys, she doesn’t feel like she draws any attention in a room. No one seems to look at her and go, “oh my god she’s here”. When I took her shopping I found this stunning red dress. I’m talking Louboutin red, form fitted, to the knee stunner. Oh did I mention one of the first things she told me was, “I hate red, it never looks right on me?” Yeah. She had a look of horror when I put it in the dressing room. A few moments pass and she comes out holding her head higher than I had seen it. Her chest was out and her smile was radiating. We found her power suit. In that moment, she went from a busy mom, to the woman who will walk into a room and demand attention.
Misha Collection says I am woman and I am here. You don’t need the latest trends to feel good, all you need is something simple and powerful. That, at the core is NYFW. It doesn’t matter how much money you have or what labels you’re wearing. You just need that one outfit that that makes you feel like you’re commanding the room and conquering the world on your terms.
