The Look: maxi dress from Amazon // sunglasses from Blue Planet Eyewear
One of the most incredible things about traveling to different parts of the world is that you can have extraordinary experiences that you won’t find anywhere else. You meet someone, and then the next things you know, a few days later, you’re sailing on the coast in their brother’s fishing boat. That just wouldn’t happen back home!
Every morning from where we stayed, we could see the colorful fishing boats chilling on the water a bit up the coast at the Jamestown district of Accra, Ghana. Jamestown, one of Accra’s oldest districts and culturally rich areas, holds a large fishing harbor with a community of many energetic, hard-working locals. The area is complex. It holds so much importance and economic value to the city, but at first glance, the best word to describe it is dilapidated. However, once you start looking at the details – the colorful artwork (we passed these colorful murals on the walk there), the gorgeous coastline, and the vibrant personalities of the people there – the beauty is unquestionable. There’s also a picturesque lighthouse, which we didn’t walk up, but I hear the views are incredible.
It was so neat just to see the traditional boats that were built upon designs from before modern technology and engines even existed. We were lucky enough that we negotiated our way into going out on one. The fishing takes place in the morning, so our little excursion happened in the afternoon once the main work was done for the day. It took almost 10 men just to get the boat in the water – it’s a truly impressive process. After we returned to the shore, like every place we went, everyone one eager to hop in photos with us.
I wore a boho tie-waisted maxi dress that I scored from Amazon for under $30! This dress is great because it’s a stand-alone piece that didn’t require me to think much about my outfit. It’s flowy and comfortable. I also plan to style it for fall with neutral toned jackets and all the ankle booties!
