Facebook in Limbo

Facebook in Limbo

Noticeably, Facebook has been coming under attack lately. Tech Crunch has had plenty of embarrassing articles putting more nails into Facebook’s coffin. Only time will tell if Facebook will be able to survive the ever expanding race of the social media platforms out there. Here are some issues that Facebook really needs to look at to regain their health.

1. Slingshot

This is Facebook’s version of Snapchat. Is it going to work? Tech Crunch asked if this was going to be Facebook’s third strike. Quite frankly, I am going to have to agree. It looks like it’s cool but it looks like it is just like what’s already out there.

To me, I’m not sure if it will pan out. It feels like it’s been a waste of time. Snapchat denied a reported $3 billion to sell to Facebook as well. It’s time to figure out where to go now there Mr. Zuckerberg.

2. Poke

Now, we all know that poking was one of Facebook’s first functionalities. It wasn’t the best functionality. However, Facebook decided to make it an app all on its own. Aye yi yi.

Personally, I always found Poking to be a little creepy. Hey, who am I to judge though? Take a look at it and see if you like it yourself.

3. Paper

Now, I love reading the news. In fact, I frequent the Huffington Post’s blog often. However, Facebook is trying to be the be all, end all when it comes to media & news.

Paper makes it possible to have a cooler looking feed than the standard Facebook feed. Users can use gestures with high frequency. Hell users have to use gestures because that’s all there is to it. Even though it is cooler looking than the original feed, it does feel a bit cluttered.

Take a look at Tech Crunch’s video review and have a look for yourself.

When Good Branding Goes Bad

Even though Facebook has had some pretty cool concepts and made sure everything was streamlined, they really need to work on figuring out what the public and their users want before developing the technology. Facebook is also very involved in making sure they extend their reach. Maybe it’s ahead of its time, maybe it’s not. Regardless, these few flops have cost the social media giant some big bucks. It makes me think of all the backlash on the company for invading users’ privacy with too much technology.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love technology and what it give us as a society. I am in no way shape or form asking Facebook to disappear. Heck, I’m promoting this article on it. I am simply stating as a brand, Facebook has been doing itself a disservice by coming late to the game like it did with Slingshot and providing their users with products that aren’t all that cool. I would like to see the social media giant step it up and bring us something we can’t live without. You know, the next Facebook.
