Transitioning through the different stages of life can sometimes feel like New York City traffic. The looming frustration of road blocks and the feeling that everything is moving except for you. When you’re imprisoned in a chaotic mind, finding time for a mental recess is necessary to release the buildup and press the reset button. Whether you view it as meditation or not, everyone has a different tactic to disconnect from the world and take a breather. May it be a book, music or simply thinking about puppies, those “distractions” can sometimes not only pull you out of a rut but also inspire your decisions.

If you are looking to experiment with innovative ways to pull yourself away from a funk, give fashion shows a try. I know it sounds crazy, but hear me out. From the rhythm of the music to the flow of the garments, fashion shows create an experience that is other worldly. Similar to after you have a cup of coffee, you feel rejuvenated and ready to tackle any challenge that could be thrown your way.
Despite having lived and worked in New York City for a lengthy amount of time, I always feel a ping of anxiety before I re-enter the labyrinth after being gone for even a week. Every day in the city is a new experience and throwing yourself into the unknown is absolutely terrifying. In these situations, you will truly never have the rewarding view at the top if you don’t climb up the mountain. After making the leap of faith and attending my first New York Fashion Week show on my own, the Noon by Noor collection proved to be worth every ounce of strength it took to get there. I have never experienced a show that could not only relieve my anxiety, but create an atmosphere for empowerment to take over and leave me craving another testing experience.
Whether you are watching at home in bed with your Ben and Jerry’s (watch the shows live here!) or sitting in the crowd, the sheer magnificence of the garments will captivate your mind and serve as an unlikely form of meditation. Fall down the fashion rabbit hole and find a show that speaks to you.
Searching for a relaxing show, for instance, the Noon by Noor runway, is a step in the right direction. The Spring/Summer 2017 collection focused on comfortable, lightweight garments that allowed total freedom and movement that seem like waves in the ocean. For example, the pink full length dress along with the white skirt and trench combination shown below flowed with every step.
In coherence with the elegant embroidery seen throughout the collection, the show gave a whimsical yet natural feel with bare faced models and minimal styling. This unexpected twist could be seen in various looks including the final piece which incorporated plain black pants with a dramatic top along with an all white pairing of loose pants and a beaded top.
The collection embraced the simplicity in the craziest moments while drawing focus to simple movement instead of a deadline that is too close for comfort.
Overall, the show was not only down right soothing, but it reminded me to appreciate the simple beauty that can be found amongst what seems like chaos (keep in mind, no one truly has their act together). Taking a step back and appreciating the moment cleared my mind and made me forget all of the negative thoughts polluting my mental space and confidence. Fashion is an intricate part in all of our lives and it can make a positive impact in unlikely ways. Amongst the hustle and bustle that the world entails, take time for yourself to regain the balance that you’re missing. You may be surprised with where you end up.
