The other day, I can’t remember where I read it, but it was something about how we should have “launch showers” for when people in our lives start businesses – just like a baby shower, or wedding shower, or housewarming party, etc. I was like, “OH HELL YES”. I mean, you can have a launch party, but let’s face it, when you’re starting out, you’re just crossing your fingers tightly hoping you break even with what you have to dish out to hold an event like that.

Starting a business is a big freaking deal. It’s a monumental life moment. What a difference it could make if our friends and family would show up for us with support and bring a bunch of stuff that could be useful for starting a business (like a ConvertKit subscription, a few must read books for entrepreneurs, maybe even a few people could come together to pitch in for a logo design, you know? Instead of a diaper cake, we could make fun sculptures of Keurig cups because no matter how much coffee you have, it’s never going to be enough. Just a few ideas).

No, it’s not the same as having a baby. Just like having a baby is a different occasion than getting married. But it’s scary, it’s life altering, and it’s not a leap that we deserve to go through alone. It’s our chance to leave a special type of legacy and it deserves to be celebrated.

I started thinking about this recently when I started putting together this piece featuring Seed. When I collaborate with a brand, I always send over a few questions to get to know their story. On her questionnaire, the founder, Rebecca Gournay, shared that she and her husband (Benjamin) created Seed after struggling with infertility. Like mental health, I’m only just beginning to understand that infertility is one of those topics so many people deal with but no one wants to talk about. So, I knew I wanted to know more about Rebecca’s story. I sent over a few questions, which she answered with so much strength, vulnerability, and eloquence. Her last sentence was, “I guess you never know what your legacy will be? But I know that Seed is a great part of our purpose.”

Whoa. That’s strength right there.

I don’t have kids and I haven’t tried (yet!), but I want them. I don’t exactly put the best things in my body. I eat whatever I can easily grab because I’m in that constant state of “I HAVE TO DO ALL THE THINGS”. And if you ask me if I want to go get ice cream, I’ll never say “no”. I use whatever beauty products sound like they’ll solve my problem without paying too much attention to the ingredients. I do work out a lot, so at least I have that going for me. But, I do worry about if my negligence will bite me in the butt when I get to the place in my life where children are a possibility.

You might be thinking this is going to be one of those “fairytale” stories where everyone gets everything they’ve ever wanted in the end, but it’s not. These kind of stories, where strength is found in unexpected places and where destinations change or desires aren’t always met, are just as important to share.

Rebecca and her husband don’t have children, though they did spend four years trying. They did get pregnant once, but lost it pretty quickly. So, they give their love in other places. Rebecca shares, “we like to tell people we have two AMAZING rescue dogs who we love. I know it’s not the same, I don’t mean to suggest that it is, but we have a little “family,” and we try to spend a lot of time with nieces and nephews, and even have one of our nephews living with us now! So, we do get to be “maternal” and “paternal” – know what I mean?”

They also birthed Seed, a body care brand that features blended seed nutrients for your softest, healthiest, most beautiful skin. When they were trying to start a family, making healthier lifestyle choices became essential. Other than being over 35, there was no indication of why Rebecca would struggle to get pregnant. So, like when most of us “type A’s” have something we’re looking to accomplish, we attempt to control as many of the elements in the process as we can. Moving to more natural choices in everything from beauty care to cleaning products helped her feel like she was doing the best she could. The problem was, she discovered many “natural” formulas weren’t actually natural and still had not-so-good for you ingredients (not to mention the effectiveness of natural products is often questionable even despite the hefty price points).

This couple knew they could do better. That’s why there’s no tricks or word games with Seed. Because they have their heart in the game, when they say all of the formulas are plant-based and contain straight-from-Mother Nature ingredients, they mean it! Here you can learn more about the great lengths Seed goes to make sure every formula is not only safe for use, but also nourishes your skin.

I can personally speak to the effectiveness and quality of Seed’s products! Rebecca sent me three of the luxurious products in the “Seed Satin Lip Gloss Collection” to take to Florida with me on my recent vacation, and I’m certainly impressed. This gloss is a triple threat! It softens your lips, is packed with nourishing ingredients, and the colors are GORGEOUS. What I loved the most is these glosses have a lovely subtle shine instead of a thick, sticky shine like most others. It was great to not have to worry about my hair sticking to my lips on all the rides at Disney! You’ll want to keep applying it because the texture just feels like it’s doing so much good for your lips. Thankfully, there’s a little mirror on the side to make application and touch-ups easy peasy. If I haven’t convinced you yet, the price will. Each one is only $9.95.

Great products aside, I think there’s something we can all take away from this brand’s story.

When we have something we want, we prepare a reserve of time, energy, excitement, and effort that we’re ready to spew out when we get to whatever that milestone is. Unfortunately, often it doesn’t matter how hard you work, how strategic you are, or how badly you want it; sometimes you just don’t get to have it. But that does not mean you have to scrap all of the internal resources you were preparing inside of you. You can take that love, commitment, and energy you had ready to give and transfer it into something else. It’s not a replacement, it’s just something different. You don’t have to get over it, work through it, or even be okay with whatever wish was unfulfilled. You can both acknowledge absence and create purpose within the same story. You also deserve to be supported and celebrated regardless of the path(s) your purpose in life takes.

“It was really difficult – sometimes, it’s hard because you feel like you are missing something important (truth be told I have a few tears as I write this),” Rebecca confesses, “But you know what, we are lucky still. I am married to the love of my life. He is amazing, my best friend, my partner. We love our families, including our nieces and nephews. We joke that we get cuddle time every day with our two dogs. And, yes, very importantly, we feel like we are offering something truly *good* for people. Healthy, clean, feel-good products. When people tell us that our products make them feel good – whether it’s because the ingredients feel safe for them (clean, no allergens) or because their skin is soft and healthy, that is very, very rewarding.”
