In this post: As inspiration for your fall outfits, I’m showing you how I turned the dress I lived in this summer into a fall look. I’ve also included a few things that help me get through this time of year, because fall isn’t exactly my favorite season.
The Look: [sp] Go for Gold Necklace ($27), Good Mood Earrings ($17), and Hit the Ground Running Ring ($27) from 7 Charming Sisters // Similar olive shift dress (ON SALE – $23) // Similar navy cardigan ($98) or budget friendly option here ($23) // similar ankle booties ($70) // Taylor Tassel Crossbody Bucket from 88 Handbags (ON SALE – $40) // Escape Watches Soho Watch ($150)
I live in Pittsburgh, PA, and although fall has started on the calendar, we’ve been having 87 degree days and I am SO okay with it. Therefore, I’m going to soak up these uncommonly warm September days and do everything I can to work my summer dresses into my fall outfits for as long as possible (because summer dresses make me happy!).
As you might know, this season isn’t my favorite (since I have brought this up here, here, here, and here). Fall is nice, I guess. It’s not that I particularly hate anything about it. It’s that it signals that sliding up the icy hill when I try to leave my house and bitter cold red nosed days are on the way, which I just don’t do well with. I’m also so much more productive when it’s bright and warm outside, so it’s essential that I check in with myself this time of year and ask, “how can I keep my motivation and spirit up?”.
Three little things that always help are: 1) Ordering my pretty new planner for the new year (check out these recommendations), 2) scheduling outings upfront because I’m way less of a spur of the moment person when it gets chilly outside and 3.) hyping up the little things that I do like about fall (just ask Shaun how excited I was when I laid eyes on the first pack of Caramel Apple Twizzlers I saw this season – I was so scared they weren’t going to make them this year!)
For this look (the last one I shot with my long hair!), I wanted to show off how to turn a basic summer dress into a cozier fall look. Are you ready? It’s super simple.
I started with the olivey green shift dress I’ve been living in all summer (here’s a similar one you can snag on sale for $23!) and added a lightweight navy cardigan like this one and a pair of lace up ankle booties like these (although, if I had it in my budget I would absolutely invest in these beauties from Rachel Zoe).
My style is a bit more minimal in the summer. I like a no fuss, no fight kind of look and often stick with dainty jewelry and smaller accessories. Fall is the perfect time to start bringing out your statement jewelry and larger purses. I’m wearing a fishbone chain necklace (this type of link is very on trend right now as it gives a little something extra compared to traditional chains), a pair of eye catching studs, and a sparkly ring that’s quite a stunner. All the pieces are from 7 Charming Sisters, where I love to shop for affordably fabulous on trend jewelry. The brand was created by 7 friends who have become like sisters but all have very different tastes and styles, which makes 7 Charming Sisters a unique jewelry destination that truly has something for everyone!
While you’re adding this to your arsenal of ideas for fall outfits, I’d love to know…
What’s your take on fall? Would you rather have summer, or are you diving head first into pumpkin spice everything right now? If you’re a fall lover, what’s your favorite thing about it?
