In This Post: The winter months can cause a number of inconveniences when it comes to working out. The cold makes our muscles ache, we catch illnesses easier, and our lungs don’t operate at full capacity. Luckily, we discovered Hickies, an elastic lace system that takes tying shoes with freezing fingers off the problem list.

I like to keep myself in shape. Really, I do try. But, I don’t enjoy being cold, and I don’t like going to the gym (I have my own unique sets of workouts I do in the privacy of my own home). So, every year, staying in shape during the winter months presents quite the challenge. Sure, I can still do my at-home workouts, but those don’t really involve a whole lot of cardio. If I’m not outside or participating in some sort of indoor sport, you won’t find me running very much.
Thus, the only way for me to truly keep up with my cardio throughout winter is to brave the cold. That means I need to be bundled up and have everything easily accessible so I don’t have to expose any unnecessary skin to the cold. One of the biggest obstacles in maintaining this process is always shoes. They either come untied, or feel loose and need adjusted, or maybe they’re too tight. All of the aforementioned issues are difficult to solve with gloves on your hands, so my poor fingers must risk getting frostbite.
This year, however, we were introduced to a solution to that problem: Hickies. No, not those kind. These Hickies replace the laces on any pair of shoes, always leaving them at your desired fit and eliminating the need to ever tie them again. Sounds pretty convenient, right? Trust me, it is. There are three different fit options for this elastic lace system: regular, loose, or tight. Once you take a look at the provided directions and get a feel for how it works, it’s an easy process to put them on. For such a small, relatively simple item, it truly has given me extra motivation to keep up with cardio in the cold, because I no longer fear getting frostbite and having to amputate some fingers.
If you’re looking to take just about any pair of shoes to the next level, I recommend giving Hickies a try. They have tons of different color options, and I honestly think they look quite stylish. Combine that with the convenience factor they provide, and I’d say Hickies are the real deal.

While I give Shaun a lot of credit for his tendency to brave the colder weather and go for a run, it’s not my favorite thing to do (especially because, as I’ve told you many times, I am made to live in somewhere like Florida, not Pittsburgh). The cold makes my muscles feel like they’re older than they are – or maybe I’m just getting old, haha. But, when we paired up with Hickies for this post, and I realized I’d be able to keep my hands in my toasty gloves, I was a little more okay with it.
Truth be told, this actually ended up being quite a relaxing little outing. There’s this huge beautiful park – South Park – not too far from where we live that I visit many times each summer. I can honestly say I’ve never been there in the winter and it was still just as lovely even with the layer of snow covering up all the greenery. One of my favorite spots to run by in the summer is this little pond, so I figured it would be a good point to visit on this day, too. The icy layer covering the water glistened in the setting sun and made for the perfect scenery for us to grab a few photos.
It was so refreshing to not have to fiddle with my shoelaces while running! I don’t know how many more winter runs I’ll be embarking on, but I’ve been really into trying new workout classes lately and I’ve already ran into numerous other situations where I wish I would have been wearing my Hickies. For instance, a few weeks ago we stopped by Pittsburgh Punch for a boxing class and it was frustrating when I had to take my gloves off in the middle of class to retie my shoes!
Needless to say, not only are these no-tie shoelaces functional, I think they look sleeker and more stylish than ordinary shoe laces! They’re also way easier to slip on when I need to get out the door in a hurry (which is like every time I need to leave the house). Plus, aside from a variety of neutral tone options, they also come in lots of pretty colors like lavender and neon pink.
Whether it’s braving the cold outdoors or finding a new indoor workout that gets you excited this time of the year, one of the best ways to beat the winter blues is to stay active – so keep moving, Gems!
