How long do you think people keep New Year’s resolutions for?
Not long. According to an article by US News, 80% of resolutions are no longer in place by the second week of February. So, while your resolutions and new goals might be fresh and on track now, February will be here before we know it! Some articles even mention that only a bit more than half of us even make it to the one month mark. So the questions to answer become, what’s the secret on how to keep new year’s resolutions and how do we reset our resolutions when we get off track?
Here’s the secret:
It’s failing.
For real! Let’s just be realistic. You’re not going to keep your new year’s resolutions. It’s simply not going to happen. You’re going to fail, you’re going to fall off track. AND THAT’S TOTALLY FINE. Where most people go wrong is, they don’t get back up. They waste all of their energy and effort on beating themselves up for failing that they have nothing let in them to try again. So, I truly believe that the way to change that is to accept that the failing part is going to happen. It’s a necessary step in the resolution process. The next step is to waste as little energy on the failing part as possible. No judging yourself. No beating yourself up. No criticism. Observe, report, and then get back up. Stop to breathe and take care of yourself if you need to, and then try again. And then, once you’ve failed a few times and gotten back to it a few times, start working on shortening the time you spend in the failing stage between each attempt.
When you are struggling with your resolutions, here are a few tricks:
Sleep
Listen, I know you think you’re superwoman and can survive on minimal sleep, but if it’s at all possible, stop doing this to yourself! ESPECIALLY if your New Year’s resolutions involve fitness related things. Sleep also helps you reset yourself and your focus each day. If you’re stepping up your workouts, you need sleep for energy and recovery. To maximize your recovery and sleeping hours, check out how cool Under Armour’s Athlete Recovery Jumpsuit is. Not only is it a soft knit and oh so comfy, but the technology behind it is mindblowing. The fabric pattern inside returns infrared energy to your body which boosts blood flow and oxygen to your muscles to help them recover faster. It breathes so nicely so I don’t notice myself getting too hot or too cold at night wearing this. If you could see me working from home, it’s almost embarrassing how often you’ll catch me wearing this jumpsuit, because I just never want to talk it off!
Dress the part
A lot of the habits I want to form this year center around working out. Not because I want to look great (that is a great benefit though), but because working out does so much for my mental health and it’s something I tend to neglect when I get really busy. I’ll tell you what though, never underestimate the power of cute, comfortable workout clothes to motivate you to get moving! My favorite find recently has been Under Armour’s Seamless Longline Bra because it holds everything up and fits perfectly. I even find myself reaching for this instead of my regular bra because it’s so comfortable (even if I’m wearing it all day) and doesn’t make things feel smushed!
Something Exciting
If there’s room for it in your budget, invest in an item or two that will make you excited to do the work necessary for achieving your goals. For example, if you want to spend more time running this year, you might consider a fancy new pair of headphones that you’ll be excited about trying on your runs. AfterShokz recently came out with the AfterShokz Trekz Air which are open-ear headphones that use bone conduction technology and they are SO COOL. This means you can listen to your favorite music and podcasts while still being aware of your surroundings. I often avoid wearing headphones in public places like airplanes and coffee shops because it gives me anxiety to not know what’s going on around me. When I go for trail runs alone, I also get nervous about not being able to hear what’s happening with traditional headphones, so I feel safer wearing these! Plus, almost all of the headphones I’ve ever owned have really hurt my ears if I have them on for more than 20 minutes. The open-ear structure of these ones completely prevents that discomfort! Can you tell I’m just a bit excited to have these in my life?!

Energize
No matter what your resolutions are, you’re going to need energy in order to work towards them! I’ve been really into the steady, non-jittery, healthy boost in energy that these CELSIUS powder sticks give me! Clinically proven to accelerate metabolism, CELSIUS is a fitness drink with the same amount of caffeine as 2 cups of coffee, 7 essential vitamins, zero sugar, no artificial preservatives or flavors, and no aspartame. I give the Cranberry-Lemon flavor a 10/10 in the taste and texture departments compared to other things I’ve tried like this! You’ll find it at Amazon, Target, GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, and major grocery chains.
Self-Care
We forget that adding new habits and activities to our lives can often bring other time-consuming elements with them that we didn’t plan for. For example, continuing with the fitness theme, it’s so wonderful that you may want to incorporate more workouts into your schedule, but with that, it’s just as important to add space for stretching, recovering, and rejuvenating all those muscles that aren’t used to this level of physical activity. I’ve been paying more attention to what muscles need some extra TLC and using products like a Tiger Balm Patch and Tiger Balm Ultra to relieve pain (which makes it easier to jump into my workout the next day!). The Tiger Balm Patch is really convenient for when I’m on the go and pressed for time because it’s mess-free. Then, I use the Tiger Balm Ultra at night since it works fast and is comforting on my sore muscles!
