Even though it’s the first day of fall, I am not agreeing to put away my summer dresses yet, but I will comply with getting out my fall layers. At the top of my list for layering pieces to invest in for this time of year are blazers. Before my interest in fashion started growing, I used to think all blazers were stiff and restricting. Now that I know better, I’m just delighted by all the comfortable options out there these days. From cozy sweater blazers like this one to options with lots of stretch in them that allow for movement (like this navy one), there is a functional, fashionable blazer out there for every occasion.

While it’s hard to find a blazer that won’t work in a professional environment, I do love the elegance a blazer can add to any casual outfit. Because comfort is just as important as style to me, I tend to gravitate towards longer, looser styles like the tunic blazer I’m wearing here from FRENCHMAUVE. I’ve been searching for a blush pink blazer to add to my closet for quite some time, so I was very pleased that I was able to snatch this one up from Stitch Fix (I am a Stitch Fix employee with no obligation to be writing about the company). Its stretchy, knit fabrication is so comfortable, and it even has pockets! After a long day of driving earlier this month, I was happy to put it on for dinner and drinks at the Kimpton Cardinal Hotel in Winston-Salem, NC. It instantly made my jeans and a t-shirt look appropriate for the elegant atmosphere of The Katharine Brasserie & Bar inside the hotel.

How to pick the right long blazer:

If you put on your long blazer and feel like you lose your shape, make sure you do something to accentuate your waistline. My favorite ways to do this are tucking a simple shirt into high waisted pants that come up to my waistline, pairing a blazer over a dress that has a defined waist, or opting for a single button blazer that buttons around where my waist is. When in doubt, open front blazers are my go-to because they’re the most flattering on any shape and they aren’t restricting. It’s also important to consider fabric when making a blazer purchase. Stretch can make all the difference in whether or not you fall in love with a blazer! If you tend to run warm or live in a warm environment, be sure to opt for a blazer that’s primarily linen, rayon, or cotton.
