Tuesday had me running back and forth across the city to two amazing shows – Michael Costello and Lupe Gajardo!
First up was Michael Costello, a Project Runway finalist whose designs can be seen on the Red Carpet and have a celebrity clientele, including Beyoncé and the Kardashians. The show was a packed house, with celebrity guests Chris Brown and Christina Millian. Models graced the runway in glamorous evening wear. Lace, sheer textures, cut-outs and deep-v necklines dominated the runway in mainly black and silver. Sparkling sequins emblazoned crop tops and floor length gowns, and structured, elegant fur jackets were paired with sassy skirts. His structured and edgy designs are made to embrace the female body, and truly give a modern twist to the little black dress. A favorite of mine was a floor length, deep-v sheer and shimmery gown!
Next on the agenda was Lupe Gajardo, an up-and-coming designer from Chile. After an overbooking fiasco, I managed to squeeze my way in and got a look at this designer’s truly one-of-a-kind fashions! Her designs were characterized by an earthy, natural feel. Neutrals such as beige, white, brown and black splashed across draping gowns, slim-fitting suits, and knit sweaters. Gajardo played around with a lot of textures- there were knits, silky gowns, jackets made of burlap, and distressed denim. There were also fun, unexpected details like feathers and safety pins. Gajardo’s collection was a magical collision of the modern daytime casual outfit with a bit of jungle fever! My favorite was definitely a floor length beige gown with a colorful, fully feathered top. I also loved the hairstyles- models wrapped a thick, gold band around teased ponies for a tousled yet royal look.
Both of these shows brought neutrals to the next level, whether it was Costello’s futuristic and edgy look, or Gajardo’s natural and earthy feel. I can’t wait to shop some similar looks for my closet :).
Stay tuned for our fashion week coverage – next up is Art Hearts Fashion, featuring a variety of designers, including more of Costello!
