What’s more uplifting than a luxuriously scented perfume? One that also gives back to communities in need!
Meet Jeanette Price, the talented perfumer behind Peachy Keen Perfume. Peachy Keen’s line of fresh, exhilarating, and handcrafted fragrances instantly transport you to the breezy California coast. And while you’re reveling in the soothing breeze, know that a portion of all proceeds goes to local community causes! Peachy Keen is perfume with a heart.
Peachy Keen Perfume is about to launch its winter line, LAYERS, so I talked to Jeanette about the story behind Peachy Keen and its perfumes, as well as her commitment to helping and empowering others.
SD: Tell me a little about your background- how did you get into perfuming?
JP: During my undergraduate studies I immersed myself in learning French, which led me to study abroad in Paris, France and Rabat, Morocco. Perfume is a major part of both of those cultures- I visited a few of the major perfume houses in southern France, and Morocco’s oils and fragrances are some of the finest in the world. After I graduated from college I moved to Morocco with just a suitcase and Euros I earned while working a summer job in Paris. It’s easily one of the greatest risks I have ever taken. I found a job teaching and learned to make perfume as a hobby. It was always an interest and a talent I was honing, but I never considered making perfume a professional pursuit until much later.
SD: What makes your perfumes unique?
JP: My perfumes have a lot of depth, both in meaning and construction. I use a mix of fragrance oils and essential oils, while a lot of mainstream perfumes use only fragrance oils. When I construct fragrances I work around not only the materials but the emotional impact each scent holds. Torrey Pines, for example, has a very sharp note of pine that by itself is very abrasive; however psychologically adding in the familiarity of vanilla and lemon make it much more palatable. Something about that contrast makes the fragrance uniquely sexy.
I also take incredible care when thinking about the meanings of fragrances. Perfume is so personal, and it is something that you literally carry around with you all day.
SD: Explain your motto ‘perfume with a heart,’ and your commitment to giving back.
JP: If you haven’t noticed yet, I’m into duality and ‘Perfume With a Heart’ is no different. The middle notes of a fragrance are also known as ‘heart’ notes, so the motto is a nod to the particular craft of perfumery in our brand’s products. Also, coming from a teaching background, I have a commitment to social justice and am using Peachy Keen as a platform for addressing those issues. Tom’s Shoes kickstarted the social entrepreneurialism trend, however Peachy Keen is the first fragrance brand to make itself stand apart by doing social good. Perfume is oftentimes considered a guilty pleasure, and purchasing “Perfume With a Heart’ takes away that guilt.
SD: As a military spouse, how does this affect your business and motivations?
JP: I had little idea of how many stereotypes there are of military spouses until I became one. The fact is, despite education and work experience, military spouse unemployment is 4 times the national average, and 80% of those employed consider themselves underemployed. As a business owner I see an opportunity to help empower and enable military spouses by offering job opportunities. I outsource as much work as possible to fellow military spouses- and their work is absolutely incredible. My branding, the artwork for my bottle labels, even the make-up artistry for the photo-shoot I just had for my new collection- are all the hard work of military spouses.
SD: Talk a little bit about your new collection.
JP: This new collection is bold, edgy, and perfect for winter. LAYERS features three new fragrances, each of them a statement yet designed to mix and match with one another for a customizable experience. To prove that our products are handmade, each of our bottles are dipped in a colorful wax that matches the fragrances’ names: Indigo, Marigold, and Ash. The LAYERS collection gets its moniker not just from how the fragrances are designed to be layered, but from the multiple meanings of each scent as a color, a plant, and a person’s name. I’m still keeping the fragrance descriptions for Indigo, Ash, and Marigold a secret until they go on pre-sale November 11th, but you can get a sneak peek of the collection by following Peachy Keen on Twitter and Instagram.
If you’re looking for a new winter scent, or even the perfect holiday gift, look no further! Peachy Keen’s perfumes will make you feel beautiful from the inside out.
