Personalize your PR Life

Whether you are new to the PR world and are finding your niche, or you are a long-time professional simply getting bored with your job, know that there are many options available in the public relations industry. If you think that you have yet to find your niche, keep looking! There are so many opportunities within public relations, so just because you haven’t found your passion yet, doesn’t mean it’s not out there. Here are some of the main ways that public relations can vary; take these into consideration and personalize your PR life!

In-House Vs. Agency

This is perhaps one of the biggest differentiators among PR professionals. Those who work in-house are resident experts in the field of PR as they manage a company’s public relations on their own. The benefit of working in-house is that you have the ability to develop a very expansive knowledge of your company, and (hopefully) a passion for it as well. Additionally, as the business’ PR pro, you have a lot of responsibility and power when it comes to media relations.

On the other hand, one can work at an agency that consults with a wide variety clients. If you find that you are easily bored on the job, you may prefer working at an agency since you are provided with more clients and thus more opportunity for spontaneity and creativity. On the other hand, at an agency position you are one of many and are not always calling the shots. Additionally, if you prefer to pour your passions into one client and become an expert on them alone, working in-house may suit you better.

Boutique vs. Global Firm

Another big difference in the world of PR is the size of the agency that you work for, and this has a great bearing on your day-to-day work. For example, as part of a boutique firm, you have direct and often a close-knit relationship with your CEO and all of your team members. Additionally, you can quickly become knowledgeable of all aspects of PR, since your small size promotes team flexibility.

At a large firm there are different pros and cons. You may not have the same degree of closeness with your co-workers and the ability to grab a coffee with your CEO, but you have access to technologies and budgets that will make your job much easier! Also, you have a greater ability to focus on your skill-set and advance especially in that- rather than becoming a jack of all trades.

Who Are Your Clients?

Your clients define your job and your workday, so make sure to work at a firm that caters to people or businesses that really interest you. Do you love government? Consider public affairs and PR for government agencies and/or individuals. Do you love social causes? Try out PR for non-profits. Or maybe there is a certain industry that you are passionate about, such as beauty or health. Make that your specialty and find an agency that works with those clients- or work in-house at such a brand.

What Are Your Skills?

Working in public relations forces you to become a great multi-tasker with many talents- but realize that everyone has their own natural talents that need to be nourished! Are you a good writer? Spend time handling press releases and pitches. Do you enjoy teaching and working with people? Grab up any media training opportunities. Do you thrive on social media? Make that your go-to job.

There are so many ways to bring passion and personalization to your job, so don’t get stuck in a rut! The opportunities are endless.
