My new year’s resolutions look a little different this year.
In the past, I’ve made goals and resolutions that centered around things that sounded good to achieve or things I *should* be doing – like having 5 figure months in my business, being on time, fitting back into a dress from college, and organizing my entire house. None of which actually ended up happening, haha. Given that I’ve done more surviving than thriving during the second half of 2018, I knew those kinds of goals weren’t going to do me any good right now. So, I reframed what I wanted to work on a bit. Rather than focusing on the goal, I’m switching my attention to the feelings I know these resolutions – or habits rather – will leave me with. It’s so important to get clear on why you’ve picked the goals that you have because when you fall off track (which is inevitable), knowing what feeling you want to create more of will provide you with much more motivation to get back on track than the goal itself will!

Join a gym because working out clears my head
My family and I are about to join Planet Fitness and I cannot wait! I’m very much a group class kind of work out person – you’ll frequently find me a barre, cycling, yoga, and ballet classes all around Pittsburgh. Classes get tricky though because the times don’t always line up with what’s ideal for my schedule. Also, to be honest, I have no idea what to do at a gym other than run on a treadmill. One thing that I do know is, working out helps my mental health more than any other trick in the book. When I workout, every area of my life seems more manageable. So, my goal really isn’t to join a gym, it’s to make working out more accessible to me and my schedule so that I can feel more of all the good things a good sweat session does for me. Joining a gym is going to help me accomplish more of that feeling!
I’ve heard really great things about the Planet Fitness locations around here and how they really uphold their promise to maintain a non-intimidating environment. I also appreciate that fitness training is included for free in all memberships – it will be so helpful to have someone show me around the equipment. It’s a great time to join Planet Fitness because new members can join any location through January 15th for only $1 down and $10 a month. Plus, there’s no commitment!
NOTE: While it will be nice to go with my family sometimes, I am NOT using my mom and my sister to hold me accountable for going – your goals are your own responsibility!
Wear a smartwatch because it subtly gets chores off my to-do list, which feels great!
I know this sounds like a really small step, but I’ve been wearing a smartwatch for the past few weeks and it has changed my life. On the one that I have, there’s a circular meter that runs around the outside of the digital screen that fills up as you take steps throughout the day and it’s such a fun challenge for myself! Rather than procrastinating on small tasks like doing laundry or running something upstairs, I get right up and I’m like, “this is more steps for today!”. Not only do I feel great moving around more, but it’s a relief to get those things that I used to put off checked off my to-do list sooner these days.
Declutter my house because being in a clean space helps me feel less overwhelmed
One big issue I run into because I work from home is, I will always choose working over cleaning and organizing because it’s just not something I enjoy doing and the business seems much more important! Every now and then though, I get this spark of motivation to clean, reorganize, and declutter and I never regret it! It feels amazing and calming to walk into a room where everything is in its place and you notice lots of space. I’ve also realized that I get way more done when I’m working from a clean office than a cluttered one. I feel like I have to clean my house, and that makes me not want to do it, but when I tell myself, “I’m doing this because it will decrease my overwhelm”, I can totally get on board!
Eat more vegetables because I will feel more energetic
I hate vegetables. I hate them. If I tell myself I have to eat more vegetables this year, there’s nothing about that statement that makes me excited. Sure, I might try for a few weeks, but eventually, I’ll lose motivation. However, when I think about the weeks in the past where I’ve been more mindful of what I’m eating and have incorporated more vegetables into my diet, I realize a few things… Not only do I feel proud of myself when I push myself out of my produce comfort zone, but I also know that I feel more energized and capable when I eat more things that come from the Earth. So, as hard as it will be, having more energy really helps my life out, which is why I’m going to eat those greens!
