Let’s face it: some situations just don’t call for a bag or a clutch. You shouldn’t have to worry about holding your purse at that music festival or baseball game just to touch up your lipstick during intermission or the seventh inning stretch. Jewelry designer Satin Van Cleef is on a mission to make sure that every woman stays gorgeously empowered all day long. That’s why she created Vienna Victoria, a fashion forward line of jewelry that conceals the make-up must-have that every woman wants the most: lipstick. “It is like handing over a jar of confidence,” she says. “A woman with lipstick is unstoppable.”
Named after Satin’s daughters, every Vienna Victoria piece is made with Swarovski Elements and holds a hidden compact mirror with a fabulous lip color. “It’s no surprise that Vienna and Victoria are my inspiration, but I must say traveling with them gives me inspiration I could only imagine in my wildest dreams. It’s funny as a parent you are always thinking of the things you want to teach them, but you could never imagine how much they have taught me and continue to teach me every day.”
When it comes to inspiring other entrepreneurs, Satin has three words: vision, resilience, and listening. “You want to create something that you can see evolving for years to come and be ok with getting out of your comfort zone. And listening skills are important because if you think you know everything, you will never learn anything.” She also advises women to break away from the cultural definitions of success and define the word for themselves. “Success changes over time and morphs into different things,” she explains. “Right now I feel successful because I am contributing two happy emotionally aware and exceedingly kind girls to the world. Later in life I will define my success on how I made a difference in the world.”
Satin balances her work and personal life through a strict scheduling regimen. “If it’s not scheduled, it’s not real. If I want to do something, I set aside time in my calendar and put the phone aside to avoid any distractions.” Satin’s laser focus has landed Vienna Victoria in big name publications like O Magazine and Cosmopolitan.
Though Satin admits that taking the leap and starting a business is the scariest part of being an entrepreneur, the business advice she received along the way guided her toward success. “Define your purpose. Knowing exactly what you want to achieve in your business and life will bring clarity and nothing is more powerful.”
