Lots of mothers will tell you that one of the many simple joys of having a child is dressing them up in adorable outfits! While they’re still nice and young, it’s fun to dress them up, show them off, and take lots of cute pictures before they have time to grow up and protest. Shopping can be a very fun and special time for little ones and their moms, but mall trips can be hectic for busy families. To make shopping a little easier and less stressful, Jenny Rodgers opened Taylor’s and Tots, an in-store and online boutique that carries fabulous women’s apparel, as well as darling outfits for little boys and girls. Taylor’s and Tots is the perfect one-stop spot for stylish moms because they can knock out shopping for their kiddos and themselves all at once, without breaking the bank!
KA – Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and Taylor’s and Tots?
JR – My name is Jenny Rodgers and I am the owner of Taylor’s and Tots. We opened June 2nd of this year. I was inspired to open a boutique after working as an RN for 7 years. I was ready for a career change. I love shopping and have almost 10 years of retail experience, so I wanted to create a shopping experience for women who could shop for themselves and their children in one stop. The store is named after my daughter Taylor, and one of our favorite things to do together is shop, so I wanted create a place where mothers and their daughters could shop together and make shopping an enjoyable experience for them both. We sell clothing and accessories for both women and children. We mostly sell little girls clothing, but I also have a little boy named Kameron who is 15 months old, and I realized shopping for little boys can be just as fun. So we have recently added some little boy clothing and accessories. I strive to find quality clothing at affordable prices. I also love taking pictures of my kids, so I offer many items that are perfect for mom and daughter, or for siblings to wear for photos. Customers always talk about how affordable and cute our clothes are and how they can always find something they like at an affordable price. Also, our online customers always compliment [us on] how quickly they receive their items. We keep active on Facebook and Instagram, and style our items on models, so many times people find a complete look they love. We love interacting with our customers on social media. We have monthly contests, and also [run] a blog for our followers.
KA – What special visions did you have for your boutique before you opened it?
JR – The vision I have for my boutique is for it to be a place where people come to expect great service. I love meeting my customers both in store and online. We offer great incentives to purchase online such as same day shipping and free shipping on orders over $75. I want our online store to grow, and with hard work, I know it will. I would love for Taylor’s and Tots to become a household name and maybe one day let my children take over and continue the store. I also enjoy helping others, and I felt guilty leaving nursing to do this, but I have worked with many charities and will continue to do so. I love helping others and giving. I will always help those who I can, and with our success I am looking forward to getting involved in more charity work. I want to teach my children that giving can feel even better than receiving. And of course I would love to grow; it would make me so happy to open more stores, and of course grow our online fan base.
KA – To you, what are some of the advantages of boutique shopping, as opposed to shopping at well-known retailers?
JR – Well I worked off and on at a retail chain for 10 years and there are some advantages of shopping at a boutique, such as customer service. Many times the workers in retail stores are younger adults, who just need a job and a paycheck. I am here because I want to be and because I enjoy helping people find that special outfit for themselves and their children, or even that special gift for someone special. Also, our variety is better by far. Many times retail stores have certain “styles” and do not offer many different [options]. I look for variety when I choose pieces. I look for casual, for dressy, and for all body types. I know some women are tall and love maxi dresses, whereas some women are more petite and love shorter dresses. I look for items that will look good on all body types and am sure to keep a variety. I have been asked to carry men clothes, and that may be a possibility in the future. Who knows what will happen. We carry a few more expensive lines such as Jack, BB Dakota, Swanky Baby Vintage, and Dreamspun, but even those lines are affordable. And I want each customer to be able to have what they want, so we offer a flexible layaway program.
