Lewes, Delaware – Things to Do
Fresh off our most recent family vacation, I’m sharing a list of fun things to do in Lewes, Delaware. It was our first time in Lewes and we certainly enjoyed it! There were plenty of activities in Lewes, DE to choose from and the area offered a nice variety of options for keeping everyone occupied and happy. I’ll work on an itinerary of our trip, but first, here are a few of the activities we did and were considering for the week.
Fisherman’s Wharf Dolphin Watching Tour
We love going on dolphin watching cruises when we’re traveling (we did one as part of our Outer Banks itinerary, too). It’s a fun change of pace in the middle of a few beach days while still spending time on the water. In Lewes, Delaware we did the Dolphin & Whale Watch Cruise with Fishman’s Wharf. It was a three hour boat ride and while we didn’t see any whales, we did come across a number of dolphin. The crew members were friendly and helpful. It’s a Lewes Delaware activity that we would definitely book again in the future.
Quaint Exploring in Historic Lewes
Not only does Fisherman’s Wharf offer sight seeing cruises and fishing trips, there’s also a waterfront restaurant, Wheelhouse, too. The surrounding area around also includes a few other shops and restaurants. However, if you go across the South Street Bridge (which is right new to Fisherman’s Wharf), you’ll enter the Historic Lewes District which is filled with cute Victorian homes, beautiful scenery, and charming small businesses. It’s actually “the first town in the first state”.
Historic Lewes Farmers Market
For fresh food and flowers for the week, try to stop by the Historic Lewes Farmers Market. There are a few different days and locations to shop so that you can stock up. It’s a producer-only farmers market that focuses on offering small farmers and small producers a way to stay in business.
Take the Cape May-Lewes Ferry
Another fun activity to do in Lewes Delaware is the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, which takes you across the Delaware Bay into the tip of Southern New Jersey. You can ride the ferry as a foot passenger, or you can take your car on it if you’d prefer to have your own transportation in Cape May. Cape May is a seaside destination filled with colorful Victorian houses, shops, and eateries. Even if you don’t explore Cape May, the ferry is a fun way to work a scenic boat ride in to the trip.
Hopkins Farm Creamery
We never ended up making it to Hopkins Farm Creamery, but I would have been delighted to go. Reviews rave about the delicious ice cream and how unique the experience of an on-farm creamery is.
Head to Lewes Beach
Lewes offers a few simple beaches with limited parking. This makes for a great option if you want a quiet beach day or spend the evening peacefully watching the sunset. If you’re looking for a boardwalk experience with snack and food options, Rehoboth Beach is only about a 20-30 minute drive depending on traffic. The area around Rehoboth Beach is really cute, too, with lots of restaurant options and little businesses to explore.
Antique Shopping
My family and I have different ideas of what’s fun on vacation. While I wasn’t able to go in any antique shops, there were certainly no shortage of them that I would have loved to wonder through!
Outlet Shopping
For more traditional shopping there are also a number of Lewes Delaware outlets in the town. We’re talking multiple outlet plazas with nearly every store imaginable so that you can truly shop ’til you drop.
Lewes Delaware Museums
Lewes is very much a historical destination. If you have any history buffs in the family. you’ll definitely want to check out some of the Lewes museums.
