We have a very special Boutique Buzz for you this week! Meet Broke Little Rich Girl and owner, Samantha Lugo. Samantha is just your everyday girl who has a true passion for style. Her mission? To provide a go-to boutique where all women can look and feel fabulous without spending a ton of money.

Aside from the one-of-a-kind fashion finds that fill her boutique, Samantha has a lesson to offer the independent retail industry. She always wanted to start a boutique. However, after doing her research by traveling to boutique about the country, sitting around and waiting for shoppers to come in as she saw at many shops just wasn’t her thing. Instead of dropping her dream, she found a different route by bringing fashion to the community instead of waiting for people to come to her. How did she do this you ask? Samantha turned an old bread truck into Pittsburgh’s first boutique on wheels! After a year on the road building the Broke Little Rich Girl name and gaining many loyal shoppers, Samantha was recently able to make her original dream of owning a storefront come true (which is located at 3816 Butler Street in Lawrenceville).

I’m honored to say that I’ve had numerous opportunities to work with Samantha since her early days of launching BLRG! It’s been so much fun to see the boutique grow – watching more and more shoppers fall in love with the unique experience Samantha provides. The Broke Little Rich Girl herself was kind enough to answer a few questions on the boutique, her favorite items, and the fashion trends she’s loving right now! Keep reading…

Allyn Lewis: What’s your favorite item in the boutique right now?

Samantha Lugo: I’m in love with this grey faux fur vest! It has an awesome leather belt that cinches the waist in and the fabric is so soft and so comfortable. I would definitely wear this piece with chunky knit underneath and my fav black booties.

AL: What is your process like for selecting items for the boutique?

SL: I go to all of the shows in NYC myself. I am very particular about what I bring to the store because I have to make sure that its not only reasonably priced, but that its also good quality. I read fashion magazines, blogs, and I even monitor whats going on in the fashion scene outside of the US because I know they are way ahead in the trends. I use all of those resources to help guide my selections for the store.

AL: What’s the transition been like from truck to both truck and storefront? So exciting!

SL: It has been very exciting! I love being able to bring the truck to you and now that the weather is getting cooler I’m starting to focus more on private home parties. I love being able to bring fashion to peoples homes and just have a good time, but I also love being able to stock up on more of the trendy pieces that I love and being consistently in one spot so everyone can find me. I really have the best of both worlds!

AL: What sets Broke Little Rich Girl apart from other boutiques?

SL: I try to bring in pieces that are really trendy. You can find pieces that have a classic look and shape, but there will always be an added detail to it that makes it super unique, but still very wearable. My prices are very reasonable and the quality of the pieces can’t be beat. I take a lot of pride in how I make my selections and who I work with and it shows.

AL: What current fashion trend are you loving?

SL: I love the color mixing that’s happening for fall. Everyone loves a classic black or brown piece for this season, but the fact that the trend is moving towards color is very exciting. It’s amazing how fashion can effect your mood and adding bright colors like orange or mustard yellows just make you happy!
