Left Shark, escaping llamas, and #thedress have left us glued to our screens, tapping away on keyboards, and aching for more interaction. It’s human nature to want to be part of something bigger than ourselves and these trivial trending topics have given us a space to do just that. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t add up to much – and I know you felt that as you woke up this morning, half ashamed and thinking “I can’t believe I defended the color of a dress last night.”
It’s time to start having conversations that count. It’s time to be catalysts for change. You have more to offer the world than weekly Bachelor live tweets and callous complaints about the barista that got your order wrong. We need more from you.
The world needs to hear what you’re passionate about and what you value. We need you to spread the word about causes you care for and companies that are making a difference. This doesn’t mean solely writing somber and sobering statuses about poverty levels in third world countries. It means sharing stories of substance. It could be an article that made you smile, solid career advice for others in your niche, or something as simple as an inspirational quote that helped you through a rough morning. It’s about passing on stories that motivate us to be better and sharing your side with the honesty and humor that only you can provide.
And even though it’s “just Twitter” and the Internet is not a place to take anything too seriously, it’s the largest and loudest megaphone we’ve got. Don’t believe me? See just how big your impact is with Twitter’s Analytics tool. In a single month, I gained over 15,000 impressions with 85 tweets. That’s 15,000 opportunities to make an impact.
Don’t set yourself up to be the girl who spent a whole week defending the color of a dress that doesn’t even deserve to be talked about in the first place. You’re so much more than that – I promise.
